The gift in donations. Anatomical donations as a medical choice or as an identity trait?@PragueSB

I presented this deck at the Prague School of Bioethics 2019 – kudos to Martin Zielina who organized it and who gave me the best present ever – his very own annotated guide to the best beer in Prague!

Within the ethical framework provided by the Oviedo Convention and of its additional protocols, transplantation medicine would not be possible without organ donors.

But what is the idea of gift embedded in the practice of organ donation? Can the development of a solid philosophical framework around the idea of gift help in developing better policies for donor recruitment?

This workshop aims to:

  • present and characterize the medical and scientific differences between different kinds of anatomical donations;
  • analyze the theoretical production around the idea of gift;
  • propose a new theoretical model;
  • analyze a case study to reflect on the results of its practical implementation in donor recruitment.
